History of the Kevin Dunn Memorial Fund

On April 11th 2003, friends and family were shocked and devastated by the sudden passing of Kevin Dunn, a loving husband, father, friend, and musician. The cause of his death was later contributed to Primary Cerebral Vasculitis, a form of blood vessel constriction affecting the central nervous system. At a mere twenty seven, Kevin left behind a wife, Karie, and a 20 month old son, Kevin Matthew. A memorial golf outing was later planned in his honor to benefit the Kevin Matthew Dunn Trust Fund.
The first outing was held on August 9th, 2003, at the Oakland Beach Golf Club in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania. The outing was such a success, it became an annual event.
As the second outing approached, Kevin Matthew was diagnosed with Developmental Delay. He required the assistance of specialists to help him develop at the level of a typical two year old. By the 4th outing, he was diagnosed with PDD NOS (pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified). His treatments continued and by the 5th outing he was diagnosed with Autistic Disorder.
In light of these diagnoses, the proceeds from the 5th year outing were shared with ABOARD (the Advisory Board for Autism and Related Disorders). Since then, proceeds from the annual outing have been shared with ABOARD as well as Autism Speaks.
The 11th annual outing took place on July 20, 2013 at the Oakland Beach Golf Club. Last year’s event raised almost $10,000 because of the thoughtful gift donations and participation of so many wonderful people and businesses. The 12th annual outing will take place on July 26, 2014. This year, proceeds will be shared with ABOARD’s Autism Connection of PA. We are asking for your support again this year.
As for Kevin Matthew, he is now thirteen years old and has just completed 6th grade at the Chartiers Valley Middle School. He is doing very well! Kevin Matthew continues to play baseball in the Miracle League in Cranberry. He is also playing hockey with the Greater Pittsburgh Special Hockey Association as a member of the Steel City Icebergs.
Kevin Matthew continues to receive wrap-around services to aid in his development and is making excellent progress. He’s an amazing child with a wonderful sense of humor. Uncertain what the future holds, every day is a blessing. His presence continues to encourage and inspire.
